Twisty Tower
Twisty Tower is a 12-foot-tall sculpture anchoring Village on Valley, an eclectic group of renovated shops and buildings in the heart of Montevallo, Alabama. Serving as both a landmark and a statement, the tower introduces contemporary public art into a traditional Southern town, offering a bold new layer to its cultural landscape.
Constructed from stacked, rotated volumes of pressure-treated pine, the form rises in a playful twist, being both simultaneously simple and unexpected. At its base, each face is marked with large-scale letters (N, S, E, and W) corresponding to the cardinal directions, transforming the piece into a functional compass as well as a sculptural beacon. Surrounding benches, built in the same framing language as the tower, define a gathering space set within a gravel court, extending the sculpture’s geometry into the public realm.
Twisty Tower was imagined as a way to reframe small-town identity through art. It innovates by blending utility with expression, serving as both orientation device and community anchor. It inspires by inviting residents and visitors to pause, gather, and see their town with fresh eyes.
