BLACKWATER HUNTING AND FISHING CABINS

The Blackwater Hunting and Fishing Cabins are a two-cabin compound designed for a private reserve in rural Macon County, Alabama.  Positioned carefully along the slope of a lake, the project demonstrates how thoughtful residential design can balance large-scale gathering with quiet retreat.  The main cabin serves as the social anchor, accommodating two families and numerous seasonal guests, while the secondary cabin provides a more private setting for a single family, including dedicated office space for extended stays.

The cabins are connected by a covered walk and anchored by a broad terraced deck that steps down to the water’s edge. Designed for gatherings around a fire pit and long views across the lake, the terrace becomes the central social space of the compound.  By preserving the natural topography and extending living outward, the project turns the landscape itself into an active design element.

The architecture draws from Southern vernacular traditions but reinterprets them with precision and modern detail.  Vertical siding, corrugated roofing, and natural stone are paired with tree-trunk columns along the lake elevations, merging regional identity with contemporary craft.  Clean roof-to-wall connections, carefully detailed soffits, and the integration of natural ventilation and daylighting express a design language that is both familiar and forward-thinking.

Inside, the main cabin is organized around an expansive living, dining, and kitchen area that opens directly to the lake. Sleeping areas are distributed for flexibility, supporting large family use and visiting guests during hunting and fishing seasons.  The private cabin balances this energy with intimacy, offering privacy and the utility of home offices in a remote retreat setting.
